Allbirds announces 22% reduction to per product carbon footprint in annual sustainability report
Footwear brand continues progress toward goal of reducing its per product carbon footprint
SAN FRANCISCO, October 14, 2024 – Allbirds has published its annual sustainability report, revealing a 22% (1.58 kg CO2e) reduction in per product carbon emissions during 2023. That reduced Allbirds’s per product carbon footprint to 5.54 kg CO2e, as the company works to cut this number in half by 2025.
Amongst the initiatives that drove 2023’s progress were a packaging redesign, which led to a 7% reduction, and broader renewable energy adoption that drove a further reduction of 2%.
Allbirds’s annual sustainability report always reflects on the year prior, to allow time for sufficient data measurement and analysis.
“Climate change is a complex topic, and we’ll continue to learn, adapt, and evolve our approach to maximize our positive impact,” said Aileen Lerch, Director of Sustainability, Allbirds. “But, by virtue of setting ambitious, short-term targets–rather than kicking the can down the road to a vague, far-off date –there is still plenty of work for us to do.”
Underpinning this work, Allbirds also:
- Completed its third B Corp recertification in 2023, with a score of 96.5 – an 18% increase since their initial certification in 2016, gaining points in the Environment, Governance, and Customer categories.
- Is participating in The Change Climate Project’s (TCCP) evolved certification program to establish new standards that incentivize companies to invest in projects that cut emissions from their operations and supply chain, and fund high-impact carbon removal and mitigation projects around the world.
- Is working to transition to Carbonfact, a carbon management tool built specifically for the fashion industry, which will arm teams with actionable data to measure and reduce emissions through all phases of a product’s lifecycle.
Allbirds has been at the forefront of the climate conversation since becoming the first fashion brand to label its products with their carbon footprint back in 2020; open-sourcing its carbon footprint calculator; collaborating with Adidas in May 2021 to create the lowest carbon running shoe at the time; and, on February 6th, 2025, they plan to release the world’s first net zero carbon shoe, the M0.0NSHOT Zero.
